老班章海拔1600米以上，最高海拔達到1900米，平均海拔1700米，屬於亞熱帶高原季風氣候帶，冬無嚴寒，夏無酷暑，一年只有旱濕雨季之分，雨量充沛，土地肥沃，有利於茶樹的生長和養分積累

老班章始於1476年，自哈尼族先民從其它地方遷徙到此以來，便開始養護山中的古茶樹。現全寨共有120戶人家，自稱愛尼人，主要經濟收入為茶葉銷售。憑藉近年來普洱茶行情走好和老班章茶的知名度，老班章村民都過上了幸福生活，家家修磚房、騎摩托、坐皮卡、用太陽能

老班章在普洱茶界具有“茶王”的地位

老班章是標準的大葉種茶，條索粗壯，芽頭肥壯且多絨毛

老班章生態好、樹齡長，有強烈的山野氣韻，特有老班章香，香型似乎在蘭花香與花蜜香之間。老班章的香氣很強，茶湯、葉底、杯底上都可以嗅到，而且杯底留香比一般古樹茶更強更長久。

3年內的老班章湯色金黃明亮，3年之後金黃開始向黃紅轉變。

老班章的苦澀退化很快，一分鐘左右就轉而回甘，品飲過老班章後整個口腔和咽喉都會感到甜而滑潤，而且時間會很長，如果沒有吃什麼刺激性食物，這種甘潤感會持續幾個小時。

老班章長於山野，樹齡久遠，故而老班章的茶氣強，在飲時可以感覺到，而且飲後手、腳、頭、背等會發熱出微汗，當然這種發熱感因各人的身體感悟不同會有所差異。
